We had a little dusting of snow last night, and the birds are acting like they've suddenly been thrust into the frozen tundra. Squabbles and turf wars at every feeder station, and I've got at least eight feeders up to spread 'em out and reduce the tension.
All of this noise is bound to attract a big, bad, ugly death-from-above, but so far the Coopers Hawk hasn't made an appearance.
In the meantime, the bickering continues...

Wow! Makes for plenty of opportunities though.
Excellent shots, guy!!! Esp. those two single finches in flight! We have tons of them here too, they immediately returned after we got here from Florida and I filled the feeders.
Karen
Karen, at any given time there might be three hundred or more of them in the yard, front and back yard feeders. We're putting out a lot of nyjer/thistle this year and they're swarming us...
Black oil sun flower seed are cheaper and they don't eat them as fast. I have a steady stream of chickadees and a few nut hatch; also yellow finches by the hundreds drop in and then flock away...and two pileated woodpeckers that come to the suet.
Oue weather has dropped below zero at ningt for the past two weeks and I feel obligated to keep the feeders full.
the Ol'Buzzard
Buzz, we have sunflower in about 90% of our feeders, and that helps keep down the starling/blackbird/cowbird crowds (well, that and a pellet rifle...)
But the finches love the nyjer/thistle seed too much not to spend a little for a bag a couple of times a month. It's expensive, and they shovel it out in piles, but man! We've never had yellow and purple and house finches like we've had this winter~!
These are wonderful photos. I love to sit on the back deck and be really quiet so the birds actually land near you. Bringing out some bread crumbs definitely helps. I plant sunflowers and butterfly plants the spring to attract birds and butterflies. I can't wait for winter to end!
